Vori and Explo are Revolutionizing Retail Operations with Real-Time Customer-facing Insights

The company

Vori is the only modern operating system for the grocery industry, giving small and mid-sized supermarkets a performance edge to compete against retail giants and combat macroeconomic forces such as inflation, the labor crisis, the rise of e-commerce, and supply chain issues. Vori’s SaaS solution combines inventory management workflows and a modern point-of-sale system into a single platform, seamlessly connecting data across the supply chain.

Vori’s platform serves over 500 grocery stores, and their new VoriOS product is in beta with plans for expansion in early 2024.

The challenge

Data is crucial to Vori’s customer end-users, as VoriOS aims to provide real-time analytics that can be monitored across various aspects of retail operations throughout the day. Sebastien Estrade is one of the lead Product Managers at Vori, overseeing the development of VoriOS, and leading their customer-facing analytics initiative. Sebastien’s mission was to modernize Vori’s data sharing capabilities and empower their customer end-users to act on insights and take control of their data.

In Vori’s quest to enhance their analytics and reporting capabilities, Sebastien identified and prioritized three key considerations crucial for the success of the initiative.

1. Customer-facing analytics needed to be accessible anywhere and at any time

Sebastien’s primary concern revolved around ensuring that the analytics and reporting tools were not only accessible but also firmly belonged to their customers. Vori required a solution architecture that emphasized mobility, cloud-based infrastructure, security, and the seamless ingestion of data. Vori’s customers should have the freedom to access critical insights on the go, fostering a sense of ownership and immediacy in decision-making.

2. Dashboards needed to be customizable to meet the diverse reporting needs of their customers

Vori’s customer-facing analytics capabilities needed to be intuitive and easy to use out of the box - but also capable of accommodating the diverse needs of retailers. The solution had to strike a delicate balance between simplicity and customization. Simultaneously, Sebastien recognized the importance of allowing sophisticated retailers to customize dashboards to meet their specific requirements without introducing unnecessary complexity.

3. A modern solution architecture that enabled real-time analytics

Traditional reporting and BI tools often fall short in terms of providing actionable insights in real-time. Recognizing this limitation, Vori’s product team sought a modern embedded analytics solution that not only compiled data reports, but could display real-time insights.

The solution

In essence, Vori’s evaluation considerations revolved around integrating a solution that embraced accessibility, simplicity, and actionability. Explo stood out as an embedded analytics solution that could address these requirements, but also provided additional benefits, such as its speed of implementation, customizable features, and scalable infrastructure. Early interactions with the Explo team also displayed a true partnership, with a dedicated and responsive team. The initial deployment of Explo took a few weeks instead of months, and included a suite of embedded dashboards and Explo’s report builder solution. With the foundational analytics and reporting templates created, customer end-users would be able to customize dashboards within minutes. Moreover, Explo empowered end-users by providing access to real-time transaction reports and filters for relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Here are a few example of Vori’s Explo-powered dashboards:

This is Vori’s ‘home dashboard’ - each customer sees this as soon as they login to Vori’s back-office portal. The home dashboard is fully customizable and pulls in real-time data.

This is Vori’s ‘daily’ dashboard, which is the most used dashboard by end-users, as it provides crucial POS activity each day.

Explo not only addressed critical reporting challenges, but also met Vori’s usability expectations. With intuitive dashboards and reporting templates, end-users of any technical proficiency can generate insights in minutes. Additionally, Explo’s custom styling and white-label features made each dashboard look and feel native to the Vori platform.

The impact

For Vori’s product team, customer-facing analytics was crucial for the success of VoriOS. With Explo, Vori was able to save months by avoiding building the reporting infrastructure in-house. The ongoing savings in engineering resources are significant, as operational and product teams can handle new reporting or analytics needs without requiring engineering involvement. Additional benefits realized include:

Time to Value:  Foundational dashboards can be created in a matter of hours, and feature requests are addressed swiftly. The ease of creating new charts or reports ensures that most reporting requests can be fulfilled in minutes.

End-User Experience: The response from Vori’s customer end-users has been overwhelmingly positive. They have commended the robustness of the reporting and dashboard functions, expressing excitement about the new capabilities. The dashboards have become an integral part of their users' daily routines, enabling them to make informed decisions promptly. For Vori, this means more engaged users and more value to their customers.

“We wholeheartedly recommend Explo to other product teams seeking embedded analytics solutions. Beyond the technical capabilities of their dashboards and report builders, Explo has proven to be an exceptional partner. Their responsiveness, openness to feedback, and continuous improvements have played a critical role in the success of our platform.” - Sebastien Estrade, Product Manager at Vori.
